8th - 17th July - Mappa Mundi - Group Show & Opening Performance
Mappa Mundi is a general term used to describe medieval European maps of the world. Popularly mistranslated as 'map of the world,' the correct translation is 'cloth of the world'. Mappa = cloth. Mundi = world.
In this exhibition, emerging from D-AiR's reading towards action group, we have allowed a further drift by rendering the translation 'Mappa Dundi' or 'Map of Dundee'. This is in keeping with our own investigations of the city in which boundaries are blurred and new relationships are imagined.
During the course of our reading we have been mapping the connections and disconnections between art and life. We have thought about our place within the city and what it means to be a resident artist in Dundee. Are these two terms, resident and artist, compatible or incompatible? And how do they influence our way of living in the city?
To move from reading into action we have responded to these questions and taken as our starting point the idea of mapping Dundee. To this end we have each created our own mappa mundi – a cloth of the world we each currently inhabit.
In keeping with our location - housed as we are between 'Fiction', 'Non-fiction', and 'Scottish Interest' - we have allowed our imaginations to buttress and blur. Sometimes these maps trace definite boundaries. At other times they pass through more liminal places. Unlike most maps our landmarks are obscure. This exhibition is an invitation to both find yourself and lose yourself.
