8th - 17th July - Mary Sommerville - Object Lives

Mary Sommerville Dundee Live Artists in Residence Jonathan Baxter Recyclers

Interested in our continuous movement through different spaces and built environments, I am particularly drawn to the character of locations and objects deemed unfit for human use. Working predominantly in stop motion animation and sculpture, I create landscapes, which I feel hold within them the infinite possibility for activity to take place. As these become film sets, I animate characters, bringing them to life in their own environment whilst exploring how they relate to each other and their surroundings.

At the Tayside Recyclers Emporium the stage is already set, and within it the second hand goods emerge as characters. Objects previously cast aside by their owners come to life in the context of their temporary home, displaying something of their acquired personalities in short animated extracts.

Tucked away among the aisles, chairs dance to the sound of records dug up from a 1960s attic. Empty boots nestle in the garden tumble dryer. Wheels turn. Mice escape. Elsewhere dogs roam scratchy landscapes. A girl lies beneath the flowers. A clock ticks. Time passes. A map connects.
