Bike Light Disco Skill Share Dundee Artists in Residence

With a view to better developing a culture of cycling and low carbon living in Dundee, Bike Light Disco was the collective title for a series of events that included workshops, discussions, film screenings, mobile discos, and, yes, bike rides.

Within various contexts we met to discuss the pros and cons of cycling provision in Dundee and to see the first Dundee screening of Still We Ride. We also met with Annexinema to find out more about bike powered cinema possibilities and we collaborated with Solar City to create Dundee's first bike powered generator - otherwise known as Sparky Spokes.

In July 2010 we enjoyed our first community bike ride from City Sq to Tentsmuir (and back). And in October 2010 we launched a Wednesday afternoon skill share and bike maintance workshop at Tayside Recyclers. (Bike maintainance is now a staple diet at Tayside Recyclers.)

In November 2010 we participated in the NEoN Festival's 'Party in the Carpark'. Here we used three bikes and Sparky Spokes to provide the power for Edward Shallow's chip tune performance and accompanying video work. We also powered the Guerrilla Gallery's video of open submission images and text works, both for NEoN 201O and two subsequent Guerilla Gallery events (in 2011).

Bike Light Disco also performed as part of an evening called 'Digital Natives' at HMC (2011). Here we screened a film called 'The Delian Mode', and followed this up with a collective sound object improvisation.

In August 2011 we also hosted the Otesha Project's sustainable education bike tour. Here we organised performances for Dundee Transition Town and the Rio Community Centre, Newport.

And what about the disco? We ride with flashing lights!

It's likely that Bike Light Disco will be pedalling back into action early next year.
